Maison Martin Margiela 20th anniversary exhibition

20

In October 2008 Maison Martin Margiela celebrated its 20th anniversary. The exhibition at Somerset house is a retrospective view of one of the most influential fashion houses.

Martin Margiela together with Jenny Meirens established the fashion house and re-defined the 1980s with their pioneering designs that still influence the construction or maybe the deconstruction of the garments today. His revolutionary and demode' designs 20years ago became familiar almost mainstream. There is not a single designer that has not been influenced by his work in someways.

I loved all the themes and concepts of Maison Martin Margiela was all about and i can't wait for another 20 years of innovation.

COSMIC LOVE

Florence Welch said that “Cosmic Love” is a song about how being in love means “you give yourself up to the dark, to being blind.” With her captivating voice and rip-rowing mind blowing lyrics this song turns beautiful and haunting.

A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it's left me blind

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

F**K RECESSION

The "Corporate Cannibal" just summarises recession with simple but very effective brutal in your face lyrics written in collaboration between Grace Jones, Ivor Guest, Adam Green and Marc van Eyck.

Pleased to meet you, pleased to have you on my plate
your meat is sweet to me
your destiny
your fate

you’re my life support, your life is my sport

I’m a man-eating machine

you won’t hear me laughing, as i terminate your day
you can’t trace my footsteps, as i walk the other way

i can’t get enough prey, pray for me
corporate cannibal, digital criminal
corporate cannibal, eat you like an animal

employer of the year, grandmaster of fear
my blood flows satanical,
mechanical, masonical and chemical
habitual ritual

i’m a man-eating machine

i deal in the market, every man, woman and child is a target
a closet full of faceless nameless pay more for less empitness

i’ll make you scrounge, in my executive lounge
you pay less tax, but i’ll gain more back

my rules, you fools

we can play the money game
greedgame, power game, stay insane
lost in the cell, in this hell
slave to the rhythm of the corporate prison

i’m a man-eating machine
i can’t get enough prey
pray for me
corporate cannibal
digital criminal

i’ll consume my consumers, with no sense of humour
i’ll give you a uniform, chloroform
sanatize, homogenize, vaporize you

i’m the spark, make the world explode
i’m a man-eating machine, i’ll make the world explode
corporate cannibal

The system sucks! Face it motherf**kers, but always in style.

RIP Alexander McQueen

My favorite and the most genius British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life today. He committed suicide just days after the death of his beloved mother, Joyce, last Tuesday. The fashion world will never be the same, but the iconic McQueen avant garde designs will keep him alive! We will miss you Lee and fashion weeks will not be as exciting and mind blowing and insane now you are gone! I will cherish all his creations that i own and i will be buying more in his honour.

Facing East

Recent Works from China, India and Japan from the Frank Cohen Collection

A big thank you to Frank Cohen, the "Saatchi of the north" for sharing some of his collection with us. The Facing east collection is genius. I had the opportunity to witness "The Big Kiss" 2007 by Chen Lei shown in the picture. A boy sharing a passionate kiss with a polar bear.

"The big kiss" 2007 Chen Lei

Other pieces shown in the collection are the life size elephant lying on the floor with skin that is made completely out of bindis. It is called "the skin speaks a language not its own" 2006 by Bharti Kher. The almost gimmicky "Matrix" 2007 by Ha An based on the movie Matrix.

The "London Mayfair House" (2006), an artist's studio installed in the gallery by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara.

The extremely prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami with a vibrant painting the "Army of Mushrooms" (2003).

Thank you again Frank Cohen.

ARTIST ROOMS Ron Mueck

Ron Mueck

I went to the Manchester Art Gallery today for the new exhibition by the series of Artist Rooms. Ron Mueck my favorite contemporary artist. His work includes all this insane realistic wax sculptures of human figures at the most intimate and vulnerable moments. Most of them are not in proportion so you are faced with an extremely tall vulnerable man on a stool. The "wild man" is so scared that he grips the seat and his toes are pressing on to the floor. You see and sense fear, extreme anxiety and vulnerability. Although he is 3 metres tall he is intimidated by us almost expecting some sympathy, instead we are also intimidated by him.

"Wild man" 2005

On a small plinth at the corner of the room i could see a couple of figurines no more than 65 cm long in a lying position. A man and a woman "spooning", the guy is naked waist down and the woman is naked waist up. In a foetal position, her body fitting into the hollow of his body. I was standing above and I felt like an intruder at this intimate moment. The expressions on their faces and especially in their eyes show them to be deep in their own separate worlds. His left eye almost catched my own gaze. At that moment I realised that he is looking back at me, a really weird experience. For a split second, the sculptures are disturbingly real and I was a voyeur.

"Spooning couple" 2005

In the middle of the room on the wall an oversized face of a lady. Its the "Mask" the third piece of the series, the first two were self portraits. Apparently shortly before he made 'Mask III', Mueck had visited an exhibition containing a number of sculptures of the Buddha. With this particular piece he attempted to capture some of the inner peace and serenity of those Buddhas. The head is as round and calming as a the moon. Its symmetry is almost enhanced by the lack of a body.

"Mask III" 2005

While I was intrigued by Mueck extreme attention to detail I saw a child on the floor sitting against the wall, I had to look at it twice and for a while to realise that this one is real and he was breathing, made me laugh he did capture the vulnerability of Mueck's work.

MILAN FASHION WEEK MENSWEAR SHOWS/ Part 6

DSQUARED

It was "THE HOCKEY HORROR DSQUARED SHOW" complete with its own ice hockey ring for a catwalk! Full of rage, nose bleeds etc. And the sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania was the very skinny Bill Kaulitz the lead singer of Tokio Hotel.

The collection included generously cut shirts that resembled hockey jerseys. Some had patent leather appliqued numbers and Canadian maple leafs others a Jason hockey mask in black and white.

MILAN FASHION WEEK MENSWEAR SHOWS/ Part 5

Vivienne Westwood

This year Westwood was inspired by what she called "the roving vagrant whose daily get-up is a battle gear for the harsh weather conditions" what we call the homeless people. I think she was more inspired by DERELICTE by MUGATU to be honest.

I am not sure if anyone can actually pull this style off, but somehow the Westwood vagrants will face the all weather conditions in style!

"Spare Change?"

sorting hat from HP movies

A Vagrant Queen, he probably ate the dogs already and made them into boots!

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee!
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Love you Vivienne really!

MILAN FASHION WEEK MENSWEAR SHOWS/ Part 4

PRADA

Miuccia Prada went all all American preppy with accents of bold streetwear style patterns such as a colourful camouflage and 70s geometrics. Love those short cardigans and jumpers that finish at the waist exposing the shirts.

MILAN FASHION WEEK MENSWEAR SHOWS/ Part 3

Versace
If Terminator had sex with Tron and had babies that would be it. Love the folded, darted leather jackets, leather bags and jackets that looked as if they had been studded with ball bearings. Tailored wool felt trousers and jacket lapels coated to a mirror-like finish with polyurethane making it look like patent leather.

MILAN FASHION WEEK MENSWEAR SHOWS/ Part 2

Allexander McQueen

My favorite menswear show, McQueen called it "An bailitheoir cnámh," (a Gaelic phrase that means "the bone collector") and based the collection on the lives of the seafaring natives who survive the harsh conditions near the N/S poles the ends of the earth.

The result was insane ice-print shirts, melting-ice jacquards on wool on silk suits and on leather. Mohair suits, leather parkas, bags and gloves were printed to look like they'd been made from fur. The prints were also extended to accessories like bags gloves and shoes.

The repetition of pattern, as well as the gray-black color palette and rounded shoulder-line on some shirts, sweaters and jackets, turned the models into reptiles.

There was that chunky cable-knit sweater a gray knitwear piece that i fell in love with. The origins of the cable-knit designs goes back in the day when each fisherman would have a unique design to his sweater so that when bodies that had been swept out to sea later washed ashore unrecognisable, they could be returned to their families for proper burial. Sad but true!

I can't wait to get my hands on some ice-melting jacquards or some scale-like jacquard printed trousers.

Alexander McQueen pure genius!

MILAN FASHION WEEK MENSWEAR SHOWS/ Part 1

Men's fashion week opened in Milan on Saturday 17th January, my favorite week in January! Not really a week as it only lasts 5 days but well, 5 days full of menswear fashion enough to get you craving for Autumn to arrive again!

Burberry Prorsum a/w 10

Forget about the summer i want to get my hands on one of those insane Burberry brass armor like shoulder detailed sweaters.

It is all about outwear, heavy coats, classic pieces that were amplified in silhouette and details.

Overall a modern military inspired collection. The show was broadcasted online, following the new craze of live streaming shows. Watch the full show at (http://live.burberry.com)

Cristopher Bailey you did it again! oops
